Heart-Source Connections

What is Heart-Source Connections?

“Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart…
Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.”
Carl Gustav Jung

The HEART-SOURCE CLEARING PROCESS has its roots/beginning in the Access Energy Transformation modality, yet has been revised to include connecting heart-to-heart; breathing and communicating through the heart; flowing heart-energy; and consciously experiencing heart-centered emotions (core heart feelings) such as kindness and gratitude, appreciation, and compassion. The original clearing statement has also been changed to better fit the heart-centered practitioner and facilitator and participants.

CONNECTING HEART-TO-HEART

Pearsall (1998) explains, “Connecting heart to heart may be a form of praying. It is not only a matter of sending and receiving energy but of attending to the heart in order to become aware of the level on which our sharing of the infinite energy that is everywhere is primarily taking place within us. (p. 166)”

Heart-to-heart info-energetic connection has been measured by comparing electrocardiograms of individuals holding hands and how one might affect the other (McCraty, R. & Watkins, A., Autonomic Assessment Report Interpretation Guide, Boulder Creek, CA: Institute of HeartMath, 1996). Researchers have found that the impact of heart energy connection seems most measurable and noticeable when individuals are closest together, particularly when they are physically touching. Hands serve as natural electrodes, since they have hundreds of sweat glands that reduce skin impedance and thereby increase energy conduction. When people hold hands, they connect heart energies. When a family joins hands to say a prayer or blessing prior to their evening meal, they are also joining hearts. (Pearsall, 1998, p. 164)

BREATHING THROUGH AND COMMUNICATING WITH THE HEART

Heart-Source Connections uses guided imagery and inner knowing as part of the clearing process. As with all meditation techniques, it is important for the participant to be present, shift the focus from the racing mind, and connect with the inner self (or heart). One process found to facilitate that is in the Five Steps of Freeze-Frame (Childre & Martin, 1999, p. 67). Step two advises to “Make a sincere effort to shift your focus away from the racing mind or disturbed emotions to the area around your heart. Pretend you’re breathing through your heart to help focus your energy in this area. Keep your focus there for ten seconds or more.” Freeze-Frame is a technique developed by the Institute of HeartMath that allows the individual to stop their reaction and lets them call a time-out to gain a clearer perspective on what is happening in their life at a particular moment. It helps the individual align their head and heart, providing quick and efficient access to heart intelligence. Freeze-Frame is designed as a stress reduction tool as well as a means for allowing individuals to tap into a deeper source of intuition and power, by going to the heart. (Childre & Martin, 1999, p. 66)

The GUIDED IMAGERY is used to create the heart connection and teaching (modeling for) participants the process to intentionally shift emotional attention into a positive state by focusing on the heart and deeply and sincerely experience present emotions as well as re-experience past feelings of care, gratitude, and appreciation. The individual is asked to remember the sensation in their body, and notice that they may recall those sensations at will. Physician Alan D. Watkins calls the “emotional” heart-based techniques the way of the emotions (“Intention and Electromagnetic Activity of the Heart,” Advances, Vol 12, 1996, pp. 35-36), while referring to the physiological effects of mental, “mindful” techniques the head path of mental, mindful intentionality, such as meditation, imagery, visualization, the relaxation response, and positive affirmations techniques (“Letter to the Editor,” Advances Vol. 13, 1997, p. 3).

FLOWING HEART-ENERGY

Doc Childre and Howard Martin (1999, p. 215) found beneficial effects in people who are practicing radiating core heart feelings such as love, care, and appreciation (called Heart Lock-ins). Heart Lock-ins help sustain the entrainment state that provides a foundation for healing in the body and in relationships. Heart rhythms come into coherence for longer periods of time, thereby increasing coherence within all the body’s systems (mental, emotional, spiritual, electrical, and cellular). Sustaining coherence reportedly creates alignment with the deeper, mature heart, which brings the sender into warm contact with their personal source of spirit. (p. 215)

In their book entitled The HeartMath Solution, Childre and Martin (1999, p. 215) report, “When people send out their core heart feelings, they often report that they can actually feel the heart energy…” They further describe, “As people continue to radiate core heart feelings to others or to life, they sense the love, care, or appreciation as a tangible energy connecting them to people and nature.” When people send love and care to someone with whom they are having problems, the relationship often improves.

EXPERIENCING HEART-CENTERED EMOTIONS

In the Access Foundation book (2002), kindness and gratitude are in our heart chakra. Kindness is defined in Access as “the awareness of the space in which another creates themselves; in which we will not impinge our reality upon another. Kindness is touching our heart to another (p. 23).” Gratitude is an awareness of how to be with life. According to the Access teachings, “If we are in gratitude, everything is a flow, everything is an ease. Gratitude is the consideration we have about what it means to be loving about what we receive in the world. Gratitude does not necessitate exchange, nor does it necessitate obligation.” (p. 23)

Appreciation, according to Doc Childre and Howard Martin’s HeartMath Solutions (1999) glossary defined as “An active emotional state in which a person has clear perception of recognition of the quality or magnitude of that which he or she is thankful for. Appreciation also leads to improved physiological balance, as measured in cardiovascular and immune system function (p. 265).” Often, appreciation means some blend of thankfulness, admiration, approval, and gratitude (p. 105).

Albert Einstein once said, “A person experiences life as something separated from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of consciousness. Our task must be to free ourselves from this self-imposed prison, and through compassion, to find the reality of Oneness.”

Compassion, as defined by Gregg Braden (1997) is “The single-word expression of a specific quality of thought, feeling and emotion; thought without attachment to the outcome, feeling without the distortion of an individual’s life bias and emotion without the charge of polarity. The science of Compassion allows the witnessing/experience of an event without the polarized judgment as to the rightness or wrongness of the event” (p. 191).

Braden (1997) declares, “To the degree that we embrace Compassion in our lives, change passes gracefully, with ease” (p. 155). He believes that the keys to Compassion lie in our ability to embrace all experience as part of the One without judgment. “To live solely in the “light,” shunning, ignoring, working against and judging anything other than light is to defeat the very purpose of your life in a world of polarity! It is easy to live in the light, if the light is all there is. You, however, have come to a world where light exists in union with its opposite.” (p. 156)

Our thoughts and emotions are said to create our realities. Besides using various questions and clearing statements, the key to successfully living in the now is to stay in the emotions of kindness, gratitude, appreciation, and compassion at the heart-level.
